It’s the uncertainty that makes Ding Rong’s stomach tighten, the uncertainty helping to sober him up as the carriage sways. Though the life of an imperial servant—particularly one who works at the Western Depot—is rife with the unknown, Ding Rong has never been particularly fond of it. Sometimes, he thinks he would rather know that a situation will turn out for the worse than stake his hopes on an unpredictable future.
Maybe that’s also the mark of an imperial servant: a lack of hope.
